The Shenyang No. 2 Sino-Canadian High School program attracts elite students from the Shenyang area. The students are well behaved, multi-talented and are greatly focused on attaining high academic grades. As a teacher with 35 years experience teaching Biology in Nova Scotia schools, I find these students extremely motivated to do well, so they can attend and become successful in the best post secondary North American universities. I arrived at Shenyang No. 2 High School in August of 2018 after spending 3 years teaching in a Nova Scotia Sino-Canada program in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. I was immediately impressed by the size of the campus, the high level English skills of my Chinese colleagues and by the meals served at lunch and dinner. I have always loved teaching in China because of the respect given to teachers by students and their parents. This is my fifth year teaching in Shenyang, and, in spite of the Covid pandemic, I have loved teaching here and living here.<\/p>

On a personal level, I am a father or 4 amazing children who are now all grown up with careers of their own. I am also blessed with 2 awesome grandchildren. I love to travel, meet new people and try new foods. China has provided an abundance of all three of these. I will have to leave China soon because of the age restrictions on foreign workers. Even though I am excited to return to Canada to see my family, I will miss Shenyang No. 2 High School, my Chinese colleagues and friends and I will miss my students the most.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This is my second year teaching at Shenyang No.2 High School Sino-Canadian Program. From the first day, I felt at home through the support given by the school management and the other friendly and professional staff. I feel that this is a true reflection of the values that we aim to instill in every student that goes through our hands.<\/p>

I\u2019ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to teach at a wide variety of schools throughout China and South Africa, and I can say with all honesty that the students at Shenyang stand out from the rest. Their commitment, perseverance, friendliness, and enthusiasm are something I admire and adore. It is truly a pleasure working at a school where students are at the centre of our learning program and where they can express themselves through their learning. When I arrived in Shenyang few years ago, I felt very much at home. The climate is very similar to my hometown in Canada. The transportation system is also quite similar. After a week of being in Shenbei District of Shenyang, I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay. Then school started and I met my fellow colleagues. I began to think this was going to be pretty good after all. Now, I am thrilled to be a part of the teaching staff at Shenyang No. 2 High School. I have 87 grade 10 students that I love teaching. They are respectful, polite and enthusiastic learners. Everyday I arrive at work an hour early, just so I can hang out with my students. The leadership of school has been incredibly supportive. The support staff are constantly working to make my job and my life at Shenyang No. 2 High School easier and enjoyable as possible. I have Chinese teachers that are amazingly supportive of me and my students. The cafeteria at Shenyang No.2 High School also treats us very well. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, or supper the food is always excellent. The local restaurants also provide incredibly tasty local dishes at very low prices. The concerns I had in August are a fading memory. I am grateful for the opportunity to work at Shenyang No. 2 High School. Working as a Physics 12 teacher in Shenyang No. 2 High School Sino-Canadian Program is an amazing experience for me. I have two reasons to smile while teaching in this school. First, and the one that I will always remember, is the the effective teaching-learning process here.I am very thankful that I became part of the school which are supported by the state of the art classrooms, excellent academic programs and, intelligent students. Teaching in Shenyang No. 2 High School Sino-Canadian Program is a
blessing and extremely rewarding. I am truly fortunate to be part of
this amazing school where the students are diligent, hardworking, intelligent, and respectful. Their appreciation for my hard work and efforts is evident that I am inspired every day to perform well and always put my best effort into everything I do. My love for teaching mathematics (Precalculus and Calculus) is intensified by the eager
students looking forward to something new every meeting. I am always excited to meet my students every day since they are the most motivated, challenging, intelligent, and best students I have encountered in my teaching career.<\/p>

I am also humbled to be part of an incredibly supportive, dedicated,

I have found working at Shenyang No. 2 High School to be both an edifying and a fulfilling experience, both professionally and personally.<\/span><\/p>

In professional terms, teachers and administration have consistently demonstrated their shared commitment to creating an environment that is conducive to student learning. The results have been fantastic. Students here have been excelling in all aspects of academic life, from their coursework to their extracurricular activities to their genuine appreciation of what it means to be a lifelong learner. As a teacher, I cannot imagine a better school in which to work: students are always well-behaved and respectful of their teachers, classroom management issues do not exist here, and the administration has never wavered in its support of teachers. This development of a positive learning community, based on shared goals in education, has been instrumental to my own personal growth as an individual.<\/span><\/p>

In personal terms, I was, frankly, surprised by the ease with which I adapted to this unique learning environment. I had never visited China before, nor had I ever spent such a long time away from familiar surroundings. Yet, I had never the experienced the \u201ctrough\u201d that most first-year teachers experience \u2013 indeed, it has been a very comfortable initiation to the teaching profession. I am passionate about both Biology and teaching, and teaching here has been a wonderful opportunity to share those passions with such wonderful students. The students at SY2 are motivated, thoughtful, dedicated, friendly, and helpful. Teaching online this year has been challenging, however the students have been patient and willing to try different applications for learning and submitting their work electronically – all while maintaining a high level of communication and cooperation. Online teaching wouldn’t be possible without the support of the teaching and administrative staff on the ground in China and in Canada. Working away from the family is quite hard but working in this school made me feel that I have new family here. Students are generally good in Math. They are all responsible, respectful, helpful, and appreciative. Staff are cooperative and supportive. My name is Ricardo Jr. and I am from Philippines. I graduated from University of Mindanao, Philippines. I been teaching different subjects for about 14 years, 7 years in Philippines as a licensed secondary school teacher, 6 years in Karamay Senior High School, Xinjiang province, PRC and currently, I am teaching at Shenyang No. 2 High school Sino-Canadian Program, PRC.<\/p>

Teaching different subjects like Mathematics, Science, Biology, Sociology, Economics, P.E, and Global Geography is fun. Others may not like it, but I don\u2019t put restrictions because I knew that education is a continuous process and as a teacher, learning with students is one of my greatest achievements in life. To be a part of the teaching staff at Shenyang No. 2 High School Sino-Canadian Program is a great opportunity and a privilege for me to help the students in improving their English skills by exploring the fundamental learning concepts through hands-on activities, videos, class discussions, etc.<\/p>

Working in China is not an easy decision to make especially if you have family that you know will be left behind but still, as others always say, \u201cThe Show Must Go On” and \u201cLife Must Go On.” I would describe myself as a SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Resourceful, and Time-bounded ) teacher. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tOn a quiet spring afternoon, two years ago, I received a call that changed my life as a teacher. I was doing occasional teaching at that time; it wasn\u2019t something that a high-tech professional with a background in math, physics and technology would be happy.\n\nI didn\u2019t hesitate when I was asked if I am interested in teaching Mathematics in China; over the last 30 years the Chinese students have been dominating the International Mathematical Olympiads with an astonishing number of 134 gold medals in 29 participation.\n\nI was not disappointed and I signed the contract for a second teaching year. The teaching conditions are excellent; the classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, high speed wireless internet, there is an English library, a resource room, a computer lab and printers, all for us and our students. The access to the copier machine is unlimited and the service, provided by qualified personnel, is very fast.\n\nOur students are motivated, enthusiast and very polite. Class discipline is not an issue. We have supporting Chinese staff who are very kind and happy to help us in any situation. The leadership of the SCC school is also very supportive and carrying, with just the right balance of supervision, directions and freedom to choose how to implement the Canadian curriculum in the classroom.\n\nI like the generous, bright spaces in our school, and the vast school yard which is more like a park; the school is placed in a quiet area, and our residence is at only 10-15 minutes walking distance.\n\nMy Canadian colleagues are excellent people, well qualified and willing to share their expertise. In the part of the world where I grew up, this proverb is so widespread that the first family member I informed about my plan to go to China said to me: So you are going to seek knowledge (wisdom) after all. And I guess I am.\n\n\n\nWhen the opportunity to come teach in China materialized, I could not possibly refuse it so I embraced it wholeheartedly. I was elated, yet terrified. The elation I felt is still with me, but the terror did not last long. As soon as I came out of the Shenyang airport I was met by Mr. Ron, the Canadian Principal accompanied by Mr. Roy, The Chinese Director, and by Mr. Steve, the Chemistry teacher. The hug that Ron gave me made feel right at home and that helped dissipate my terror.\n\n\n\nFrom then on, I received all the help I needed to get settled, to secure the residency permit, a cellular phone number and a bank card. The apartment is a mere 10 minute walk from the school and there is no stress getting to work on time.\n\n\n\nAfter twenty winters spent in Canada, I can say that the winter of 2014-2015 had been the most clement. Sure, walking along Jong Jie when the Siberian (?) wind is blowing can be skull-chilling, but I will make certain I am wearing a Siberian \u201cshapka\u201d.\n\n\n\nAs all colleagues teaching at Shenyang No 2 High School will tell you, the students are very good. From my own point of view, these are the best students I have ever had the privilege to teach to. Sure enough, I have one reproach to address to some of them: They are too shy to speak in English, and when asked a question, their answer is often inaudible. When that happens, I usually ask the whisperers to step to the front and write their answer down. More often than not that does the trick.\n\n\n\nReflecting on the time I have spent at Shenyang, I acknowledge that it has been a very happy time for me: I have rediscovered that teaching to a naturally attentive audience can be a stress-free and rewarding experience.\n\n\n\nI am looking forward to returning to Shenyang next year. Professionally I have learned much from my students and through comparisons, by the students, between the Chinese educational structure and the Canadian or North American structure.\n\nThis is my fist year teaching at SCC and the students are helpful, respectful and very motivated to grow and develop as learners and individuals. The environment at the school allows you to get to know and understand the students better, with enough time to provide tailored instruction and assistance when it is required.\n\nAt first the Sino- Canadian program here is a little difficult for the students to adjust to. Teaching ESL students can be a challenge at times, but the students we teach are driven to improve their English skills. A year ago, my fianc\u00e9 (Alex) announced to me that he had found a teaching position\u2026 but overseas in China! For one year, we Skyped and I got to learn a lot about the positive and negatives of China. On the upside, students work hard and are driven to succeed. On the downside, you\u2019re away from friends in Canada and things randomly break all the time. But regardless, I decided to join Alex to work overseas! We got married over the summer, and shortly after our honeymoon, we were on an airplane, moving to China to teach! With his help, I had a smooth transition into Chinese culture, Chinese administrative procedures, and life in China.\n\nThis year I was assigned to teach Drama 10 and English 11. Drama 10 is very hands-on and requires a lot of participation, which students are not accustomed to here, but slowly they adapted and enjoyed the interaction. My wife Jessica, our two young daughters, Fiona and Alethia and our young baby boy Kieran all live in Shenyang. I am certified to teach in the state of New York as well as in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Ontario. I have been a teacher for six years. Furthermore, I have employment experience in both the business world and the not-for-profit sector. I believe the Sino-Canadian program is an excellent program for preparing Chinese students for studying abroad.\n\nHowever, it was an adjustment teaching here in China. Chinese students are very good at memorizing (which helps with studying History) but have had to learn to think more creatively in our Sino-Canadian classes. I also think when they enter our program in-class group work is a newer experience for them. Not only have I needed to adjust to the students, but Chinese students have needed to adjust to us foreign teachers. We do things differently. For example, classroom management is a skill I developed in Canada while substitute teaching for 2 years. In China the challenge is not in disciplining students but engaging the students, especially those who are struggling in developing their English language skills. I have learned to speak more slowly and clearly, to repeat myself more often and to offer extra help to those students who need it. I think Sino-Canadian program is a great program because of the superb staff (both Chinese and Canadian) that I work alongside of each day. After one year at Shenyang No.2 High School Sino-Canadian Program and several challenges, I really appreciate the staff at the school and the support system offered by our principal. Having never been to China, or not knowing anything about the Chinese culture or language, made me concerned about conducting my daily affairs, whether at work, in the market or even on the streets while commuting from one place to another. Fortunately, all these fears were alleviated as a team of Canadian staff who had been here longer than I welcomed me. Everyone was very helpful and eager to assist in any difficulty that came across my way as I was settling in. This spirit of teamwork among the Canadian staff, including the principal, has been consistently evident both at work and at the place of residence. At no point did I feel alone. The students at Shenyang No.2 High School are very respectful and positive at all times. Together with a professional staff, they help create an environment where academia thrives and flourishes. The College Counseling Department at Shenyang No. 2 Sino-Canadian High School provides career and college advising to the students from Grades 10- 12. The department is spearheaded by Alice Cokeng who is Director with the assistance by Grace Yang Li who is on the ground always making sure that students’ needs are well attended.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

Alice visits and maintains a good relationship with colleges and universities in Canada as well as the United States. She pays regular visits to the schools in order to identify the ones that are the best fit for her students. She participates in annual college admissions conferences and is an active member of OACAC (Overseas Association for College Admissions Counseling).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Oftentimes, she will pay visits to alumni , making sure that they are doing well and are happy with their choice of schools. She extends a helping hand to those who are encountering any difficulties by providing advices. Thus, her counseling work is a “never-ending” process .<\/span><\/p>

The Counseling Office helps students navigate the college and career search as well as assists with the application process . Initial meetings with parents and students are held in October of each year. Since our Chinese parents have never gone through the same process themselves but still play a critical role in the college decision process, the office ensures that parents are also educated and made aware of the current college admission processes in overseas institutions which is quite different from China’s own “gaokao” system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

College counselors meet individually with students and parents . During these meetings, the students’ academic record, interests and goals are discussed. It is during these meetings when the counselors seek to learn more about the students’ personal and academic interests along with their career aspirations. These meetings help clarify any misconceptions and myths which students and parents may have . The counseling office also puts in an extra effort in making sure that parents are aware of the ethical aspects related with the application process.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

Each year, the College Counseling Office invites and welcomes admissions representatives to visit the school. Students in Grades 10-12 are encouraged to attend these presentations in order to learn more about the different choices of post-secondary institutions . Students are made to take an proactive role by asking individual questions. Embassy representatives are also invited to visit and explain the intricacies of studying in a foreign country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>

At the end of each year, before students head off to their final choice of schools, an orientation meeting is held for anxious parents which focuses on issues such as things to bring, helping students manage their money, adjusting to school life, living away from home, student visa issues , etc. School alumnae are invited to speak to parents and provide answers “first-hand” to any questions parents may have.
